The Encourager: Excess Love

Updated: Jan 30, 2023

I was reminded of this song by Mercy Chinwo, Excess Love, and I decided to look up the word excess. Excess is an amount of something that is more than necessary, permitted, or desirable.(google.com) Another definition reads an amount or degree too great to be reasonable; overabundance; extreme. (Merriam-Webster.com)

The chorus in the song that says, "Jesus, You love me too much, oh, too much, oh, too much, oh, excess love, oh." When I first heard thia chorus, it actually didn't make sense to me, but I enjoyed the song. My question was, "how could God love us TOO much"? That baffled me for a long time. Perhaps it makes more sense now that my spiritual father, Dr. Keith K Curry, has been preaching on this series Lovers With No Covers. It has been an awakening that I didn't know I needed. I am so grateful for the teaching! Note: if you would like to check it out, here is opening message https://fb.watch/iehNhU-gTO/ . There are four.

I understand that sometimes we may think or feel that we are unworthy of the love of God. He is so good and we just aren't. He is so perfect; we are full of flaws. I would like to give you something to think about for just a moment. Are we unworthy of His love?

Jesus came and died that we may be worthy of this great love. This excess love. Hallelujah!! If we look at His love (agape: unconditional) compared to three other types (Eros: erotic passionate love; storge: love of parents to children; and philia: love of friends and equals) we understand that His love is fail-proof. I learned this month that the latter three types cannot stand alone without the love of God. I never thought of it that at before. The latter three can be perverted and can turn what was once pure to tainted and faulty. So when we look at the phrase, "You love me too much"...we see that His love, His excessive love can seem like too much because the other types of love that were supposed to be good and pure...the other types of love that we saw as unconditional...that we thought was proven...that love let us down. Those types turned out to be too much of what we didn't deserve or want. It turned out that those types couldn't be as trusted as we thought they should've been.

We cannot allow those faulty types to turn us away from God's perfect love. We cannot align those types and what those types failed at to cause us to doubt God's love and make us feel unworthy of the faultless love of God; the fail proof love of God! God's love...is excessive. God's love is overabundant. God's love is pure. God's love is beautiful... https://bible.com/bible/1/1co.13.4-8.KJV It is patient! It is kind! It is trustworthy! It is dependable! It covers; it protects!! Hallelujah!!

The love of God is...(let's go into the song a bit) amazing! It makes your life feel brand new. His love fills us with so much peace and joy! His love is healing. His love delivers! His love sets free. His love....God's love is comforting! Glory be to God!!

What manner of love is this...that God would send His Son to sacrifice His life to redeem us back to Himself! What manner of love is this that Jesus would lay down His life for a world that was and is https://bible.com/bible/1/1jn.3.1.KJVa mess and full of sin. What manner of love is this?! What manner of love is this... that the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God? https://bible.com/bible/1/1jn.3.1.KJV

We must refuse to allow the immaturity and imperfections of those around us to run us away from this excess love. THE love that cannot and will not fail us or harm us. God's unconditional love... His perfect love. Hallelujah!! It causes us to forgive ourselves and those around us. It causes us to check ourselves and humble ourselves because THIS LOVE was specially and thoughtfully and intentionally extended to us. Yes, before Christ, we were unworthy of such love. Ohhhh, but the blood of Jesus!! It is the bridge that closed the gap between God and each of us. Hallelujah!! The blood of Jesus is what makes us faultless and blameless before God. Lord, we thank You for the blood of Jesus!

I am thankful for the love of Jesus!! I am thankful for God's love extended to each of us. I am so grateful that God saw fit to cover us when others uncovered us and left us vulnerable... even the decisions we made ourselves! We are covered by the GREATEST love!! Hallelujah!!! A love that protects us and cares for us on a level that we will never be able to comprehend.

Excess Love! Jesus, You love us too much; and we praise You for it!! Thank You!!!
